Breathwork: breathing gently, through the nose

Breathing in goodness and out what doesn't serve us.

Light through bare winter trees beside a river

There is much talk on breathing and not all of it is what we are told. Yes, you can have major emotional releases and hyperventilate until you feel all kinds of sensations throughout your body. It can create what we deem to be major spiritual experiences, but are they the right ones? It can create strong feelings entering into us that might not be beneficial.

I don't rate strong breathing over and over, as it creates intense bursts of an altered state of being. This opens doorways for instability and a lack of balance in the nervous system. It's breathing correctly which provides the benefits.

The main aim of bringing breathing into my sessions is to practise breathing in through the nose, taking in all the goodness of God and breathing out what doesn't serve us.

And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.

Genesis 2:7

So if we are using our mouth rather than the nose, we do not have full access to the breath of life. When we breathe through the mouth, the breath is shallower, into the chest, and we are in the stress response. Learning how to calm the breath during stress is something we will also bring into sessions.

Held back for Nicki to decide: "Cells receive more oxygen, which creates more energy" is a physiological health claim.

There are many reasons why we should be aware of breathing correctly. The main one being it means the cells in our body receive more oxygen which creates more energy for day-to-day activities.

I teach about being aware of the breath in day to day life and changing it to ensure you are breathing through your nose: changing the pattern of your breath during activities, rather than emptying your mind to focus on it.

What a session is like

We will incorporate breathwork and non-linear movement into my sessions. This gives you tools you can use at home.

Sessions are complementary and not a substitute for medical or psychological care. If you have a health concern, please speak to your GP. Wellbeing note and crisis support
